The Most Commonly Asked Questions on Switching to a Safety Razor

Safety razors can be a little daunting to some people. We both switched years ago and haven't looked back. The main reason we did this was to stop using disposable plastic razors that were either replaceable or single use.

For the doubters out there, here are the most commonly asked questions on safety razors.

Will I cut myself using a safety razor?

It can take a little while to get used to and it took me maybe 2-3 tries until I got the pressure tight. It's just a bit heavier than what you might be used to, and the angle might be different as the head doesn't move. They are double edged and super easy to use, you just need to get the feel for the right amount of pressure to apply.

How do I change the blade?

Changing the blade is really easy. All you do is unscrew the top and the head comes apart. Use you index finger and them to remove the blade at the smaller side. Replace it with a new one and then screw it back on again. It takes about 30 seconds. 

Will a safety razor make my skin dry?

Shaving with a safety razor is no different to using a disposable razor. Make sure you apply shaving soap before using the safety razor and apply moisturiser afterwards, as you usually would. Just treat your skin exactly how you would have done before switching.

Where can I get replacement blades from? And how long do they last?

We sell replacement blades and our favourite shaving kit by Shoreline Shaving actually comes with two packs of blades already, which consists of ten blades altogether. That should last around eight months at least, depending on how often you shave. I change my blade about once a month and I use it daily.

How do I maintain my safety razor?

Make sure you keep your razor in a dry spot and out of direct sunlight. That is particularly important for shavers with a wooden or bamboo handle. Clean any hair from it after use and take it apart to dry if you wish. Don't just use it and then put it on the side... look after it.

How often will I need to buy a new safety razor?

If you look after it, then it will last you as long as you want it to. 

What shaving soap should I use?

You don't need to use a specific shaving soap when using a safety razor. We like this Orange and Lavender soap best, but if there's one that you particularly like, then you can stick to that. Just make sure it moisturises and it's plastic free.

Can I use the shaving soap all over my body?

Yes you can! A lot of people worry that they can only use it on their face or legs, but you can actually use it everywhere. Obviously make sure you're well-practiced if you're shaving in those hard to reach places.

Is a safety razor unisex?

Safety razors are unisex because, well, aren't all razors? What is the actual difference? There isn't one, it's just marketed to different people. Instead of promoting the typical kind of razor that's aimed at men or women, we stock a bamboo safety razor that is plastic-free, unisex and timeless.
